Communication and norms

Communication and Norms– Paper on the normative premises and implications of communication.

Communication and norms supersedes the corresponding sections of The Law of Logic (Het recht van de logica).

A few years after the publication of The Law of Logic it was realized that some assumptions of The Law of Logic can be seen as necessary premises of (voluntary) communication. Voluntary communication requires acceptance of a set of basic norms. Such as mutual respect, reliability as regards communication, and compliance with agreements. It follows that a society of people who communicate voluntarily has a basic law. All other laws must be compatible with that basic law.

The basic law corresponds approximately with what the Romans called ius gentium. It does not depend on parliaments or anyone’s opinion.
